What is Air Pollution?

Effects of Air Pollution

❶Control of Air Pollution is becoming the need of the hour and if we are not able to control it we will be finished. The burning of fossils such as coal, petroleum, and other industries materials release sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, this is one of the main causes of air pollution.

Causes of Air pollution

Without the atmosphere, the earth could have been burned by the intense heat from the sun. Clean air is made up of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon and small traces of other gasses like carbon dioxide. Air pollution is contamination of air through the introduction of particles such as biological molecules and other harmful substances into the atmosphere; the particles introduced into the air can cause diseases, allergies, environment damage, and death. The things that pollute the air are called pollutants; they are solid, liquid, or gasses, examples are nitrogen dioxide, hydrocarbons, sulfur oxides, and carbon monoxide.

All the pollutants are classified into two classes, primary and secondary pollutants. Primary pollutants are produced by a process on earth; they include eruption of volcanic mountains; carbon monoxide produced by machines such as vehicles; sulfur dioxide emitted from industries; nitrogen dioxide emitted from high-temperature combustion and also produced during thunderstorms by electric discharge; and ammonia produced by agricultural products. Secondary pollutants are not produced by a process instead they are formed in the atmosphere when primary pollutants react with one another, and smog is an example.

They are produced from a mixture of smoke and sulfur dioxide especially in areas where coal are burned in large quantities. Pollution is caused by various things, the sources of pollution are classified as manmade and naturals causes.

Man made causes include burning of fossils. The burning of fossils such as coal, petroleum, and other industries materials release sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, this is one of the main causes of air pollution.

Machines such as vehicles and airplanes cause a lot of pollution. Though they have their advantage of assisting in fulfilling our daily basic needs of transport, their overuse kills the environment; incomplete burning of fuels in vehicles produce carbon monoxide which is dangerous for human health.

Agricultural activities are another cause of air pollution. Most agricultural products produce ammonia as a byproduct and ammonia are one of the dangerous gasses when released to the atmosphere. The practice of using fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides in agricultural activities release harmful chemicals into the air. Industries and factories also contribute immensely to air pollution.

Manufacturing plants release a lot of carbon dioxide, chemicals, and organic compounds into the atmosphere hence depleting air quality. Manufacturing factories right now can be found at every corner of the world and all areas have now been affected. Oil industries release hydrocarbons that also pollute the atmosphere. Mining pollutes the air as well. It is a process in which minerals below the earth are extracted by use of large machines.

In the process of mining dust and chemicals from the earth and machines are released into the atmosphere hence contaminating the air.

This has been found to be one of the reasons why health conditions of mining workers deteriorate fast. Pollution also occurs indoors. This results from household cleaning product and paintings emit toxic chemicals into the atmosphere hence causing pollution. For example, when a house is painted it creates a smell that makes it hard for a person inside the house to breathe. Pollution is dangerous and it has many effects on the life of organisms and environment. One effect of pollution is that it affects the human respiratory system and causes heart problems.

It is also well known to cause some cancer and other body problems. Many people have died directly and indirectly as a result of air pollution. In areas affected most by air pollution children commonly suffer from pneumonia and asthma. A big serious effect of air pollution is global warming. Global warming has resulted in increasing temperatures across the world, in sea level waters and melting of icebergs in poles.

Displacement and disappearance of some habitats are signaling an impending global disaster if actions are not taken soon to mitigate global warming. When harmful gasses such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides are emitted into the atmosphere when fuels are burned, it forms acid rain.

Delhi had an AQI above in November and that was when the city was enveloped in toxic smog. The government had to take drastic measures such as closing the schools, hiking parking charges and declaring a public health emergency to combat the problem. It was the poor AQI rating of Delhi that made the government implement the system of odd and even cars wherein vehicles having a number plate ending with an odd number could run on the road one day and the ones with an even number the following day.

Other measures included a five-day ban on construction and demolition and a day ban on operations for a coal-power station just south of Delhi. Several cities in India are currently working towards a ban on plastic bags which not only pollute the environment but pose a threat to the marine life and animals like cows. The government should take other initiatives like developing better public transportation facilities which will encourage more people to use them.

Governments must also come up with policies in helping disposal of crop wastes which are otherwise burnt by the farmers. Policies like converting paddy straw into livestock feed, compost, the raw material for power generation, biofuel production will eventually take India towards its goal of green energy.

Also, an effective measure would be to implement the carbon tax which is a fee imposed on the burning of carbon-based fuels coal, oil, gas. The government will need to work hand in hand with the population to fast-track the shift towards cleaner and greener sources of energy. With understanding the gravity of the problems, comes the initiative from people to take measures for reducing and curbing the pollution levels in our atmosphere to achieve the goal of sustainable development and a good quality of life.

These pollutants in the air cause respiratory problems for the animals and have an adverse effect on the crops. Emissions from factories, vehicles, aeroplanes, household fire are some of the main origins of air pollution in India. Greenhouse gases also mostly contribute to the air pollution. Many factors are responsible for the emission of the gases, which cause pollution.

Some of the particles and gases emitted from sources created by humans. While some sources came into existence naturally. After the industrial revolution, the number of factories and power plants has rapidly increased, which emits tonnes of Pollutants in Air. Other mobile sources such as vehicles, ships, aeroplanes also have the major share in Air Pollution.

Household fire and farm fire are also large sources of carbon dioxide in Air. Dust decreases the visibility to a large extent. Some rare and natural occurrences such as the volcano, dust storm, wildfire are the major natural cause of Air Pollution. Making the path for more safe Environment is the responsibility of human. Below are some of the ways to make safe Environment. We, humans, are the creators of Air Pollution. So, we must take steps toward saving our mother earth.

Using energy efficient and renewable sources of energy, we can achieve our destination. Wiki page Air Pollution. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.

Causes of Air Pollution Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulates, biological materials, or other harmful materials into the Earth's atmosphere, possibly causing disease, death to humans, damage to other living organisms such as food crops, or the natural or built environment. The atmosphere is a complex natural gaseous system that is essential to support life on planet Earth. Air pollution in India can be controlled only when we should check the use of traditional fuels as the burning of these fuels pollutes the air and causes air pollution. With the help of chemical reactions harmful effects of pollution can be controlled.
